Jesus shows the depth of His servanthood in washing His disciples feet. He didn't do this out of drudgery but delight. It was an authentic expression of His love. He tells His disciples that it is also an example for them to follow. Then He goes on to say that this kind of selfless service is the source of blessing and joy. This is completely opposite of what the world and our flesh tells us. We seek to serve ourselves and get others to serve us as well. Freedom for the prison of self-preoccupation will only come when we listen to and obey King Jesus. Are you finding the joy of service in your life?
I think it's interesting that it says in verse 3, "Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under His power, and that He had come from God and was returning to God. So..." He washed the disciples' feet. It used to confuse me why it says "so". But Jesus wanted to make a point. He was about to die, and He wanted to show His disciples what His life's mission was, why He came. He came to serve, not to be served. Which is amazing! The Son of God, who could have come with guardian angels, to judge, to lift Himself up as King over all. But He didn't. He came in humility, as a baby! He was born in a stable, and now He washes His disciples' feet! Jesus was all about others. He didn't think of Himself first, even though He had every right to. He put the needs of everyone around Him before His own needs! And He calls us to do the same, to follow His footprints on a path that few find. He calls us to humbly serve, even if we don't get credit or praise or approval for it. That is humility, and that is why He came.
