July 27, 2018 John chapter 3

We can't please God in our own strength. Jesus didn't come to teach bad people how to be good. He came to bring dead people to life. Without the indwelling Spirit we are apirirual dead. Like a blind man can't see a spritualy dead man can't interact with God in a real way. Only throguh repentance and faith can God bring to life our spirit so that we can commune with Him. Even after salvation we need to rely on the Spirit's power to walk with God. What a great gift of intimacy...God has given us Himself!

    I think verse 14 is really interesting. "Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up." There are so many verses in the Bible that we kinda skip over, as if the details don't matter. But they do! I think this verse is really cool because in Numbers 21:4-9, you see the story behind that snake. God had led the Israelites so far and had showed them so many signs, but they spoke against Him. They grumbled and complained. So God sent venomous snakes that killed many of the people. But then Moses prayed. And God told him to make a bronze snake so that anyone who was bitten could look up at it and live. Do you see the foreshadowing happening here? It's so amazing! In Numbers, the people had basically forgotten God, forgotten who He is. It was the same when Jesus came. They didn't recognize who He was because they didn't understand who the Father was. So God sent judgement. In Numbers, it was snakes, but the punishment for sin is death. And not just physical death, but also spiritual death. But then God makes a way. He had a plan all along to bring His people closer to Him, to be in relationship with Him! Nothing goes before God's plan! He sent Jesus, His ONE AND ONLY Son! He let Him go so that He could have us! Sinners! He loves us! And just like the snake in the wilderness, Jesus offers us another chance through His blood! By His death, we can live! The Good News is the Good News because He chose the cross! Because He is risen, we can rise in Him! Because He's living, we can be alive in Him! He gives us life! The "life" that this world gives is so fake! It's not life at all! The world can't offer what can only be found in Jesus! Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life! He is everything we need! He is life!
