July 18, 2018 Luke chapter 18

Persistent prayer comes from knowing who it is we are praying to. God is not an unjust judge that we have to annoy until we convince him to act on our behalf. He is a perfect Father who loves us and longs for our freedom and joy to be found in surrender to his will for our lives. When we believe this, prayer moves from a fear based business transaction to joy filled intimate communion. What does your prayer life say about your view of God?

    In verse 18, a rich ruler asked Jesus how he could have eternal life. He claimed to have followed all the commands Jesus gave. But Jesus saw deeper into his heart. Jesus saw the weed that had planted its roots deep down inside of his heart. That weed was greed. So Jesus exposed what had been hidden in that man's heart and the man became sad and left. I'm sure that Jesus was sad too. He came to save the lost and show them the way, but this man was too caught up in what he had in this world. He didn't understand that eventually, it would fade away. He didn't understand that if he let go of his earthly treasures, he would have eternal treasure in heaven! Jesus knows our weaknesses. He can see down past the surface, into the roots planted in our hearts. But, so can the enemy. The enemy also sees those roots, and he planted some of them. His goal is to make them grow, until there isn't any room in our hearts for anything else, for Jesus. He wants to choke out any seeds that are growing that Jesus planted, like kindness, and love. But Jesus is stronger than our enemy! He can remove those weeds in our hearts and make us pure! But we have to let Him! We have to surrender our hearts to Jesus and know and believe that He can change us! Do you believe that? Have you surrendered your heart to Him so that He can tear out the weeds?
