May 19, 2018 MATTHEW CHAPTER 1
Why would Matthew start with all these names? He is writing this detailed account to Jews and is connecting the Old Testament to Jesus. This list of names, which is called a genealogy, shows that Jesus descended from Abraham, Judah, and David, fulfilling several prophecies of the Messiah.
There are some names of some ladies included too: Tamar, Rahab, Ruth, Bathsheba
In the Jewish culture of Jesus day, it would have been pretty radical to include women in someone's genealogy. Jesus was going to shake up quite a few things His words and way of life.
Ultimately vs. 21 tells us why He came. Praise God for the gift of a perfect Savior!

(Micah Waggoner) There were two names who stuck out to me in the chapter.
ReplyDeleteOne being Ruth the mother of Obed, Ruth was loyal and faithful to her mother in law, in that case she met Boaz and began another generation to Jesus' heritage. Solomon (number 2) just the fact that through David's sin he committed became the line of Jesus the greatest gift there will ever be.

ReplyDeleteI'll have to admit, sometimes I find myself skimming over this story after hearing it so many times- but it is amazing! The thing that really struck me while reading this is how much faith it had to have taken for Joseph. He didn't hear the story from the Bible in Sunday School, he didn't know how it would end, with Jesus dying on the cross. Yet he obeyed without question. It's amazing how God uses ordinary people to do extraordinary things!
Great point Ellie. Joseph kinda gets ignored in the story but we can learn a lot from his obedience and trust. Thanks for sharing!
